DDD Day 7 - Part 2 of the Spirit Series
After a few days of almost non-stop marching, the group of spirits took a brief respite by a small lake which glittered in the noonday sun. While their bodies seemingly never tired, the serenity of the view was nonetheless revitalizing.
"Oh my gosh, wouldn't this just be the perfect place to watch the sun set tonight?"
"As nice as that sounds, that won't be for a while. Shouldn't we keep moving instead?"
"Who said we couldn't take breaks every now and then? We spent years in a world with no sun, no moon, no stars... I thought I'd never see them again! We have a whole eternity ahead of us β I think we can take half a day to watch one sunset!"
"That's what you said last night, and the night before!"
"That's what you said last night, and the night before!"
"That's what you said last night, and the night before!"
"Oh. My. GOSH! I do not want to hear it from you three! Don't think I've forgotten what you... what you did to me!"
"We all agreed we wouldn't talk about what happened that day, didn't we?"
"We all agreed we wouldn't talk about what happened that day, didn't we?"
"We all agreed we wouldn't talk about what happened that day, didn't we?"
"But if you really want to bring it up, why not start with an apology for our son you killed!"
"But if you really want to bring it up, why not start with an apology for our son you killed!"
"But if you really want to bring it up, why not start with an apology for our son you killed!"
"Wh... I didn't... that's not..."
"HEY! Cool it, all of you! None of us are proud of what happened in Beach Cave, so justβ"
"This isn't fair, youβ"
"Get over here!"
"Paws off!"
"Guys, stop itβ"
"You want a piece of this? C'mere!"
"Hey, it's my birthday!"
"..."
"No it's... not? None of us know what date it is."
"Sure it is! For this puzzle I came up with, at least. Otherwise, it wouldn't make much sense!"
Hey, hey! Y'see, it's my birthday today. And that means cake!
Last year, my cake had five candles on it.
Four of them were lit, but the last one wasn't.
This year, though, I'm gonna light them all! Hey, hey!
I sure ain't five years old though, so how old am I turning today?

{Reveal Answer}
Once it became clear the most obvious answers weren't the right ones, the spirits descended into silence as they mulled over the problem. After a long while, an epiphany struck.
"Oh my gosh, I finally got it! The candles are numbers, you just have to read them as a sequence of ones or zeroes! Like a binary number system!"
"Oh! If that's the case, then last year's would be, let's see... two, plus four, plus eight, plus sixteen... thirty! Yup yup!"
"And lighting the last candle in the ones place, that makes this year your thirty-first birthday!"
"Hey, hey! That's right! Good work, you two!"
"Oh, why thank you, Corphish! Happy birthβ"
"βWaugh! We were so focused on the puzzle, we didn't move an inch! The sun's almost setting!"
"Well, why not stick around a little longer? You wanted to watch the sunset by the lake, right?"
"But, but... didn't you..."
"We'll just pick up the pace a bit tomorrow! Now come on, there's a nice hill over here that has a perfect view of the whole lake. Last one there's a rotten Exeggcute!"
And so, deciding to rest their legs just a little longer, the eight spirits sat to watch the blazing sunset dance across glittering crystal waters. The bittersweet spectacle reminded each of them of their peaceful, fun-filled days as explorers. Days they had nearly forgotten. Their memories, stretched thinner and thinner by unnatural time, could at last heal, rising to the surface of their minds one after another like bubbles in a stream.
One spirit delivered a quiet apology, long overdue, to the darkening sky above.
