Semi’s unfathomable strength shoves the lot of you into the lift without any time left to complain. You wind up in a pile - poor Defective right at the bottom - as the Cyan door shuts tight. Door’s shut so tight not even light can find its way through. The room darkens immediately, and you pick yourselves up off the floor with a careful attitude. Just takes one misstep for it to all come tumbling down once again…
It jumps with a start, that elevator. Don’t get any brighter, of course - the light finds a way of avoidin’ this place like a man tries avoidin’ the plague. What little you can see starts to warp. Those bracelets you’re wearin’ ain’t red no more. Colour fades from ‘em like from a broad’s face, caught in the act. Clothes can’t escape either. Don’t matter what fashion you were wearin’ before - it’s all been washed out. Far as the clothes go? I’d say they’re the lucky ones.
Thing stops just as quick as it starts. The black and white door opens up to a harbour, a pier, with a beach and a lighthouse nearby. All of ‘em got the same greyscale disease you do, though. Ain’t a single happy face in sight; but in the world with no colour, you can’t very well call that the blues. Families walked past the lift now and then, all dressed up for a day at the beach. But their swimsuits ain’t got any colour. Their beach ball’s already popped. And the dad’s coverin’ his eyes like he don’t wanna be seen. Even the kid ain’t quite sure what to do.
It’s Novella and the Punk that step out first - ladies first, and you’re all fine believers in bein’ proper gentlemen. But they got a look in their eyes that wonders why this world lost its fire. And in that wonder, they start to kindle their own. Fellas gotta avert their gaze before they let their eyes meet, less they’ll be turned into something that hurts a soul a damn lot more than turning to stone does: a man in love.
When you’re all out, you take a look back at the door. The room’s sitting on the back of a truck, and before you can ask the driver what’s what, he speeds on off outta there. You watch him go like a man off to war. The licence plate says “R3M B3R”, and for a minute, you wonder if you will.
What else to do but wander with your way out gone? The five of you walk down to the harbour, none of you lookin’ as out of place as you might think. Cigarette smoke puts a blanket over that salty sea smell as you walk down the rickety stairs, toward the only boat still in dock. A tall man in a trenchcoat and fedora faces this boat. The cigarette smoke is following the breeze, up those stairs and back to where you started. Looks like Hansel and Gretel left you a crumb trail to follow.
They try, but none of Punk, Defective nor Psychic can get a rise out of the man. You think you see him jump when Voivode shouts, “BLEH!” and bares his fangs, but he doesn’t flinch a bit. Out of options, you turn to the only boat here, walking over a wobbly old wood board to board it yourselves.
It’s a small fishing boat - but the kind that fishes for trouble, not fish. You take a look over portside, and suddenly, the world ain’t so black and white anymore…
An old man floats in the grey water - now dyed crimson like someone spilled the wrong paint onto a finished picture. His bloodshot eyes look up at you, pleadin’ for someone to help him. But that someone never came.
You get the feelin’ that truck ain’t due back for hours, and the feelin’ that somebody’s gotta figure out what happened to this guy. Defective and Novella feel something in their pockets - two blank notebooks to record their findings and answers. Some of it is already filled in…
