The year is 21XX. Following the cataclysmic crash of the Eurasia Space Colony, humanity is no longer considered the planet’s dominant species. They are forced to live in underground colonies, while robots with the capability to think and feel for themselves, ‘Reploids’, undertake the gruelling task of restoring the planet to its former state.
After many sacrifices in the name of peace, it appears that humanity and Reploids are finally able to live together in harmony. The Sigma Virus was erased during the Eurasia incident, and as a result, no Maverick outbreaks have been reported for several years.
The group formerly known as the Maverick Hunters have refocused their efforts entirely on the restoration effort, and there are no greater heroes in the eyes of the world than X and Zero, Elite Hunters beloved by all.
But this peace is not meant to last.
In September of 21XX, the Hunter Base receives two distress signals - an uncommon sight in the modern day. The mystery only deepens when the source of these signals is revealed - X and Zero themselves. Commander Signas immediately dispatches a search party to the location, formed of whoever he could find on site - former hunters, builders, and everything in between…
“Come in, Hunters. This is Alia. X and Zero’s distress signals have been traced to the building ahead of you. According to structural analysis, it’s a Reploid maintenance facility that’s been out of commission ever since the Maverick Wars. It’s possible some Mechanaloids could have trapped X and Zero inside. Prioritise their rescue above all else. Stay safe.”
The Hunters enter the abandoned factory in formation, then quickly spread out to cover more ground. But once they’re alone, they receive another transmission, this time from an unknown source…
“Well met, Maverick Hunters. I see you’ve stumbled upon my… home away from home.”
“No! Is that Sigma?!”
“How unfortunate that you’ve already been torn apart from one another. Oh, but I do have some news that will ease your suffering.”
“When you opened the door to this facility, a randomly selected individual among you was infected with a new strain of the Sigma Virus. Not even I know which of you has become… Patient Zero… Muahahahaaha.”
“The symptoms of the virus should have already presented themselves within the host’s mind. Fortunately for the rest of you, this particular strain only becomes contagious once eight hours have passed. If you can find and eliminate the Maverick before then… Perhaps you’ve a chance to save the pathetic husk of a world you still have left… Fuahahahahahahahahahaha!!”
“Hunters, come in…! Both signals disappear. The Hunters find themselves lost within the vacant darkness of the factory.
