A Ceremony for Communion With the Dead: The Hangman's Gambit
This ritual requires a minimum of two participants. One shall be designated as the Conjurer, another as the Vessel.
Flayn asked to be the Conjurer. Rue Kellogg was selected by lottery to be the Vessel.
Materials needed
Hangman's Blade: This ritual is intended to be performed with the favoured weapon of an executed murderer. However, a common utility knife was substituted.
Blood Barrier: The magic circle used in this ritual is intended to be drawn and inscribed with a pentagram using animal blood. However, common chalk was substituted.
Buried Remains: The ritual is intended to use human bones dug from the earth as a focus between the Vessel and the realm of the dead. However, a photograph of one of the Conjurer's family members was substituted.
—
In addition, the group brought a length of rope and a crowbar to assist in the exploration of the Last House.
Each item needed for the ritual was brought by a different member of the group.
Procedure
The Buried Remains shall be placed within the centre of the Blood Barrier.
The Vessel shall stand at one end of the Blood Barrier. Under no circumstances shall they leave the Blood Barrier before the ritual is closed.
The Conjurer shall have both their palms slashed with the Hangman's Blade and stand at the edge of the Blood Barrier opposite the Vessel. Their blood shall open the gateway to the realm of the dead.
At the stroke of Midnight, the Conjurer shall call out the spirit's name and ask it their question.
If the ritual is performed successfully, the Vessel shall channel the named spirit, allowing it to communicate with the Conjurer.
Any additional witnesses should watch from outside the Blood Barrier. The more witnesses that are present, the greater the peer pressure exerted on the spirit.
To close the ritual, the Conjurer shall lay their hands on the Buried Remains and say, "You are not with us." This will dispel the spirit.
