Here's exactly what happened.

After getting unfairly matched up against the vastly superior Cranidos, you couldn't take the shame of losing. You had to take it out on the organizer of the tournament, Gramps. So after your losing match you told him to meet you at the Shipyard at A4. Gramps, being the clueless idiot he was, had no idea what you were planning on doing to him.

You went to the pokemart and revived your Pidgeot with a revive and some potions, bringing it back to fighting shape. Then when Gramps arrived at the Shipyard you had Pidgeot use Steel Wing or...Wing Attack or some kinda move on him to knock him out! That's why the hair on the top of his head is matted down, because it was stuck there with dried blood that washed away in the rain!

The rest of the plan is simple, you punched him a few times to take out your aggression, then tied him up to a barely floating sailboat. A quick attack to the ship's hull could get it to sink easily, right? And an even faster Whirlwind could push the sailboat right out to sea, where my Gramps met his watery grave. The storm was just a happy coincidence for you, wasn't it? Gave you plenty of time to meet up at the Battle Tent where you gave yourself an alibi by watching mine and Jericho's battle."

"The only one who could've done it was you, Falkner. You and your Pidgeot of course."

Gary's fans go bananas at this accusation and start verbally assaulting Falkner.

Rubbing his hands together, Ibis pointed out, “A5 on the Beach; Morty was all alone on the beach according to his testimony. He didn’t see Gary, who had claimed to have been there at the time. Gary had tried to cover this up by claiming not to have seen Morty, but it was a thinly veiled excuse!”
