The arguing reaches a boiling point, theories being tossed about and sticking like stale pasta to a wall covered in sand.

After enough analogies Princess Shroob snaps her fingers, her throne slowly floating up into the air, hovering menacingly above the group.

"Enough discussion. Let's see if you are correct. Shroobsworth if you please."

Shroobsworth presses a button on the Throne and the projection on the wall changes to a video screen showing a First Person perspective of someone cooking.

Q1: (20 points) What caused Shy Guy to die? The grapefruit in his braised beef noodles prevented the medication in the red syrup to be absorbed properly in his body, causing essentially an overdose. He had a seizure, asphyxiated, and died.

Q2: (5 points) What specifically is his official "cause of death"? Asphyxiation brought on by a seizure. He either choked on his own tongue or on spit.

Answer:

There are several factors that caused Shy Guy to die. The two most prominent are Serotonin Syndrome and Acetaldehyde Poisoning. The 4 ingredients that were toxic in this case were: Grapefruit, Coprine, Ethanol, and Dextromethorphan. You might be tempted to argue that the Cognac Balls would also contribute, but those have such a small amount of alcohol it's functionally zero. The Serotonin Syndrome brings the brains function to an effective halt, stopping it from preventing any dangerous things in the body, all the while increasing the heart rate, it also brings you extreme euphoria, which is why Shy Guy didn't give any outward symptoms of dying, all the while the Acetaldehyde moves through the liver and into the gut, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream, taking the oxygen out of the blood. This is a recipe for death.

Inky Caps use up the body's functional Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase from a chemical known as Coprine, and therefore prevent the body from breaking it down further. Acetaldehyde, for the record, is very similar to Formaldehyde, which is a breakdown of Methanol. Acetaldehyde is also known as Ethanal, the second in the 3-step breakdown of Ethanol, which is Ethanol -> Ethanal -> Ethanoic Acid.

The other is Dextromethorphan (DXM) [Cough Syrup] and Grapefruit. Grapefruit is known for interrupting liver function, specifically the P450 cytochrome system. DXM causes extreme euphoria, in addition to your neurons in your brain being overflowed with Serotonin, hence the SSRI, or Serotonin Syndrome.

The body was unable to respond to the Acetaldehyde Poisoning due to the Serotonin Syndrome, and as such, both of them killed him together.

Reasoning:

Mentions the grapefruit and how it affected the "red syrup". The manner is wrong, it's that it prevented it from being broken down, not absorbed. He did OD, though. Doesn't talk about the Acetaldehyde poisoning, or the inky caps at all, which were a key ingredient in the poisoning.

I'll be generous and include asphyxiation under respiratory depression, even if they're technically different things.

Correct! The swapped dishes weren't planned by the killer, a "purple knight" swapped them to save the Princess and disguise his own involvement. Shy Guy just happened to take the fall.

Correct. Once all the substances entered his system, without medical treatment it was only a matter of time.

Answer:

Partially Correct.

Shroobsworth, when inspecting the dinner menu and tonight's orders, discovered the plot to kill Princess Shroob. While everyone enjoyed the Entertainment provided, Shroobsworth swapped several dishes around. Shy Guy was the unfortunate patsy who died instead.

Due to saying the order was to protect but not saying who it was to protect or that it was out of the killer's control (other answers said it was an "accident" which is 100% incorrect so I am being generous here)

Q6: (10 points) Who is the killer? Marisa.

Correct! 10 points. Marisa collected the ingredients during Nightly and already had the "wine" premade. Then had the recipes specifically made for when three of them were eaten (Wild Mushroom Arancini, Braised Beef on Fresh Egg, House Red Wine) they would result in the death of the consumer. All it took was a naming scheme, naming the recipes as fancy as possible to make it irresistible to any royal worth their salt.

Q7: (8 points) What is the Red Syrup? Water mixed with starch and some kind of medication, likely a cough suppressant.

4 points. Cough suppressant is correct but no mention of DXM or any specific cough syrup ingredients.

Q8: (10 points) How did some people not die? How did some people not die? Shy Guy was the ONLY person to have both the braised beef noodles and red wine.

This one is a bit tough. You all mentioned an antidote in the prickly pear soda several times but nobody actually put it in their final deductions, so I can't give points for it. Other answers like only Shy Guy's glass being poisoned is sadly incorrect, so I'll have to give it

Q9: (10 points) Who was the intended target, and why?
Princess Shroob was the intended target because she's an evil queen bitch who trapped us all here.

Correct! Mainly the killing was for regicide but essentially it was to free us all. 10 points.

Q10: (7 points) What were the poisoned meals, and what was the poisoned ingredient? Nothing was 'poisoned' per se, in that no one would die by consuming something alone. The red wine was tampered with, though, specifically the red syrup.

Answer: This one was a bit of a red herring as nothing was particularly "poisoned" but rather poisonous in the right combinations. The red wine was cough syrup, so you'll get 2 points for that, but there was no mention of the Wild Mushroom Arancini (and the Inky Caps within), or of the Braised Beef (but the grapefruit was kinda mentioned so I'll add a point for that)

"Oh boo hoo, you weren't up to snuff. Guess Marisa pulled a fast one over you didn't she? I applaud the effort but rules are rules after all. What sort of monarch would I be if I bent the rules to suit my whims? Now for your punishment... Well I can't let a regicide go unpunished now can I? And I think there's far too much royalty here for one castle. How about...a little game to decide, hmm?"

Princess Shroob hits a button on her throne and the floor beneath the Throne Room splits open, sliding back to reveal a giant wheel with different markings etched on it. Princess Shroob appears with a microphone, and hundreds of Shroobs file in, sitting in some nearby bleachers.

The podiums of Prince Peasley, King Boo, and the Dead King rise up, while the others float off to the back of the room, a metal bar rising preventing anyone from escaping.


And now we present for your entertainment:

The Wheel of Time
(cw: dismemberment, existentialism, body horror)

Princess Shroob laughs and presses another button, a die appearing above the table. It spins dramatically through the air, and you catch a glimpse of Peasley, Princess Shroob, King Boo, and the Dead King's faces on 2 sides of the 8 sided die. She tosses the oversized die up up in the air, grinning as it lazily tumbles down towards the wheel, almost in slow motion. The crowd holds their breath as it bounces a few more times, then lets out a cheer when it finally finishes rolling, landing on Prince Peasley.

"And now...Elivn if you would do the honors?"

Professor E.Gadd, hunched over (and looking rather purple all of a sudden), digs around by the Time-a-Tron 5000, revealing a gigantic set of numbers and letters. He begins typing in coordinates, a set of screens on the wall flickering on. On these screens are locations in different time periods and dimensions, with what appears to be hundreds and hundreds of options, from a quiet suburban street to a region scorched by the fires of nuclear war and everything in between.

Prince Peasley looks increasingly nervous, looking down at the wheel which has an equal list of time periods. E.Gadd pulls a lever and a crack in the space-time continuum opens up beneath him, the wind from the portal making his clothes and hair flutter.

"For you dearest Prince Peasley, I hearby sentence you to exile from this Kingdom, and from this time period altogether. You shall forever be stranded in a prison beyond any friends and family you may have once had. But I am not a cruel Princess, if your luck is with you, you may spend the rest of your days in peace or comfort. But if not..."

Her face twists in a sadistic grin as she grips the edge of the wheel. Peasley pleads for his life, for all the riches his kingdom can offer, but all Princess Shroob does is laugh. She pushes the wheel hard, each name upon it a blur as the tick tick tick of the arrow gets slower and slower.

You all look on, barely able to breath as the wheel slows finally stopping on.

Scenic Yoshi's Island: 50,000,000 BS (Before Shroob)

With no fanfare the bottom of Peasley's cage opens, and he falls screaming into the portal, which closes behind him. One of the screens expands, showing Peasley wandering in a tropical forest, when suddenly giant prehistoric yoshis attack him. He screams and runs but isn't able to get far before one's tongue catches his leg. A few battle over his delicious beany body, and he ends up getting bitten in half, his bottom half becoming a meal for the vultures.



But we aren't done yet.

Princess Shroob cackles and gives the die another toss, it falling rather fast and landing on...Princess Shroob? A look of irritation flickers on her face for but a moment, when a beam of energy blasts out from her hand, flipping the die over onto The Dead King's side.

The Dead King, now adorned in his robes, takes this rather well. Guess that comes with being a reanimated skeleton and all. Princess Shroob gives the wheel another spin, the Dead King calmly watching as it lands on...

Blubble Lake: 5000 AD (Peak Mushroom Cloud War)

The Dead King relaxes slightly, a nice lakeside resort sounds perfect doesn't it? Princess Shroob only smiles as he falls into the Time Portal. The final screen expands, showing a desolate crater, remnants of horribly mutated plant and fish life desperately clinging to life in what few puddles remain. The Dead King wraps his cloak around him like a protective shield as he makes his way out of the crater, finding a small encampment of Goombas locked in a military engagement with an unknown foe. The Dead King easily slips in, becoming a strategist for the small army, and the feed fast-forwards as it shows The Dead King fighting with his squadron on the front lines, winning battle after battle as he takes this small group of rebel forces up against the best the Mushroom Kingdom has to offer.

Weeks, Months pass in a blink of an eye, the Dead King finally on the doorsteps of the Castle. He has rallied the support of the Toads in Toad Town, and makes moves to siege out the castle itself. He is current on a hill overlooking the town, plotting out the final stages of his attack when a low whistling can be heard from above. The Dead King looks up and sees a bomb fall on Toad Town, an impossibly bright mushroom cloud rising up, his skull cracking from the sheer force of the explosion. He attempts to hold his head together as his small rebel force is utterly annihilated in front of his eyes. The Dead King attempts to stand up, but finds that his legs can no longer move. A soft white mist slowly descends, the radiation from the bomb sticking to the Dead King's body, causing his bones to melt and corrode.

The last thing you see before the feed cuts out is a mutated amalgamation of Goombas, all calling out his name as they scream, the radiation burning their skin and fusing them together.

Execution End. The Dead King and Prince Peasley have been punished.
